27Mhz SSB legal in Europe?

Roll back a few years - Let's visit 1979.

In 1979 many illegal AM CB radio users were campaigning to have CB legalised in the UK. Everyone wanted AM, and many wanted SSB too. They also wanted the frequencies to be in line with the U.S. channel allocation. In the end they didn't get either. They got a legal service but with FM and a channel allocation completely different to the rest of the world.

The Home Office stated that SSB & AM would never be acceptable because of the high levels of interference that would be caused by these types of modulation.

Thirty years on, an ECC decision made on 24 June 2011 20 promoting the use of 27 MHz SSB CB in Europe is to be approved!

The new ruling allows use of SSB CB radio kit running 12 watts PEP o/p in the frequency band 26.960 – 27.410 MHz. The ECC Decision came into force on June 24, 2011 and the preferred date for implementation of this ECC Decision by national administrations is October 1, 2011.

It looks like the HF bands are losing their appeal to the 'powers that be'. The higher frequencies are worth more financially than the lower frequencies. The proof of this is the apathy with regard to interference from PLT and other 'approved' equipment that clearly is unfit for use. The HF bands are suffering more & more from QRM and no official body seems to care any more.

Hello, all

Our next meeting on Weds. 10th Feb. will be the annual dinner and in fairness to the Doghouse management, who are giving us the use of the function room without charge for our meetings, I propose that we give the Doghouse restaurant a try this year.

We will need to book so please let me know no later than this Sun. 24th Jan. whether or not you'll be joining us and if so how many there will be in your party. (Partners are welcome.)

When I mooted the booking before Christmas they suggested that it would be helpful to pre-book our food, so please check the menu http://www.doghouseinn.co.uk/doghouse_menu.php and be prepared to make a choice after I've made the booking. It may also help if we bring the event forward by half an hour to a 7.30pm start so please say whether that would be convenient when you reply.

Hello, all

A belated Happy New Year.

With at least two members snowbound (Vic and me) and more snow forecast overnight and into tomorrow morning, it is with regret that I have to announce tomorow evening's meeting cancelled and the annual dinner postponed until Weds. 10th February.

If anyone wants to meet up at the Doghouse tomorrow, anyway, I've not booked the function room so please use the bar area instead.

Hi, both and a belated HNY.

Two things have happened to me since Christmas. Firstly I went down with flu, from which I've now almost recovered. Secondly, with the Wigginton side roads snowbound my car's remained in the garage.

I had anticipated the next meeting, this Weds., would be the annual dinner at the Doghouse, but that depended on me getting pre-orders to the Doghouse.

It seems to me there are now two possibilities :-

1) Those of you who are fit and mobile meet this Weds. at the Duck In, Aston Clinton, as we have successfully for several years now.

2) We cancel this wednesday's meeting and hold the annual dinner at the Doghouse on Weds. 10th Feb., which is not close enough to Valentines day to be likely to cause problems.

Your thoughts would be appreciated, as would a speedy reply so I can inform members of our decision tomorrow evening, latest.

AVRS Barbeque 09th June 2008

The AVRS barbeque was held at the home of Gerry (G7VFV) and Mandy.
It was a brilliant night and everyone enjoyed themselves.
Good food, good hospitality and an excellent venue.
Many thanks to Gerry and Mandy!!!

We also had a new club member attend and join - Ian from Princes Risborough who is an SWL. A BIG WELCOME TO IAN!!!

Obituary: Mon 07/07/2008 19:20
It is with sadness that I have to report the death yesterday in hospital of 'Bill' Biltcliffe G6NB.
He and his family lived in this general area most of their lives and during that time he made a substantial contibution to the amateur radio community. He served on the RSGB Council, was a GB2RS newsreader and for many years was chairman of both the Aylesbury Vale Repeater Group and the Aylesbury Vale Radio Society, whose members later granted him honorary membership. Even recently, despite failing health, he often came on to give points away in RSGB contests. He and his late wife Pat lived with their family, for most of the earlier part of their married life, in Brill where they both made major contributions to local life, including as a member of the Parochial Church Council. It was, I believe, largely because of the investment they had both made in the local community while living in Brill that, some years later, the then members of the PCC agreed to host GB3VA at the church.
I shall miss his cheerful personality and the sound technical advice he was always happy to offer if asked.

PW QRP Contest June 08th 2008 G4VRS IO91PR

The Aylesbury Vale Radio Society (AVRS) took part in the Practical Wireless (PW) QRP Contest on June 08th 2008.

The location was in the Chiltern Hills near Wendover in Buckinghamshire ( IO91PR ).

Saturday 07th June

Ross (G7GQH), Phil (M0PSH), Roger (G3MEH) and Les (G0DFC) attended the contest site to start to set up the station, ready for the contest the next day.

Les, Phil, Roger & Ross rigged the 9 element Tonna aerial. The ground was hard, but fortunately we were able to make use of some old farm machinery etc nearby as convenient anchoring points for the mast guys, needed for safety with the aerial height of 7.5m (25ft) above the ground.

Sunday 08th June

The weather during the contest couldn't have been better - sunshine and a gentle breeze.

We had Les (G0DFC), Roger (G3MEH), Vic (G6GDI), Chris (2E1PPM) and Phil (M0PSH) to operate the radio and laptop computer (for logging). Operator changes were hourly, taking turns on both the radio and the computer.

Equipment consisted of an Icom IC-275, a 9 element Tonna, rotator and HP Laptop for logging.

Our claimed score is 71 QSO's in 21 different locator squares which should put us comfortably in to the top half of the results table. We worked into Belgium, France and Scotland and our best DX was GM3AYR/P at 486km.

During the afternoon we were visited by Laura, the YL of Phil (M0PSH) who brought sandwiches, coffee & cake for the hot but smiling operators! She also brought Adrian (G7NMF) along to see the contest station in action.

Just as we were due to start packing up we were visited by Ross (G7GQH) who offered us cold tins of pop and helped with the dismantling and packing up of the radio & antenna components.

Thanks to all who operated and otherwise helped out, and especially to Les (G0DFC) who arranged our use of the site and the generator.

All in all it was a fantastic very succesfull day thoroughly enjoyed by everybody!!!!!!!

GB2BLA - Bicester In Action.

Special Events station organised by the Aylesbury Vale Radio Society.

This station was located in Launton Road, Bicester, Oxfordshire and operated by Terry G4PSH and Ivan G3KLT.

The station was active on HF and ran on 20m SSB mostly. Many Tnx for the QSL card from Peter DL5LBP in Germany.

Phil M0PSH also attended as an observer (M0PSH was a class B licencee in those days).
An enjoyable day was had!
